Field Isolation Care in Puerto Rico

ISTARI Expeditionary  | July 2023

A prototype of the ISTARI Expeditionary was evaluated in an exercise in Puerto Rico in the summer of 2023. Puerto Rico Medical Reserve Corps leadership and volunteers joined UNMC, Otherlab, and other experienced consultants to facilitate training and simulations of isolation care outside of a hospital setting (see related TPP). This activity reinforced core IPC principles and evaluated the ability to conduct safe and effective patient care in the ISTARI tent. Environmental data were collected to assess conditions inside the tent when used in a hot, humid environment. The ISTARI tent was successfully used in workflows to manage patients with communicable diseases, and much was learned to inform design evolution.
